Cumberland police officials said Sgt. Thomas Burgess checked on an elderly man Tuesday. When he discovered that the man was low on food and not eaten that day, the 28-year-old law enforcement veteran swapped his police cap for a chef’s hat.

Burgess delivered groceries to the man and then cooked him dinner, WGME reported.

“Thank you for everything you do Sergeant, day in and day out to make our community a better place to live,” Cumberland police wrote on Facebook. In a later comment on social media, the department added that Burgess did the dishes, started a load of laundry and took out the trash.
