Game notes: The night before, the two team’s young aces took the mound. Now, a pair of veterans experiencing different kinds of seasons step up. For Sanchez, the return to the rotation has had some mixed results. In his last game, Wednesday against Kansas City, he gave up four earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings. For Sabathia, he has won seven of his last 10 starts. He hasn’t finished a season with a sub-4.00 ERA since 2012. He has exactly 2,800 strikeouts in his career, just three behind Cy Young on the all-time list.
