Celtic Football Club have released a statement to say they are ‘appalled’ after seeing footage of fans singing about murdered
The video emerged online after being filmed in Sunderland on Saturday as Hoop fans made their way to a friendly match against the England Championship side.
Fans can be seen in the footage chanting: “f*** Lee Rigby, he won’t be f***ing drumming anymore”.
Lee Rigby, a drummer and machine-gunner in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was murdered, aged 25, in what was claimed to be an Islamist terrorist-inspired attack near his army barracks in London in May 2013.
Celtic have today released a statement describing their disgust at the chants.
The club said: “Everyone at Celtic is appalled by these events. Such behaviour in no way represents Celtic Football Club or our supporters.
“We understand this incident is now subject to an ongoing police inquiry.
“Let us be clear, in the event that any individuals are identified as being responsible, Celtic will take the strongest possible action.”
Trouble flared between Sunderland and Celtic fans in a number of clashes ahead of Saturday’s game.
A total of 21 people were arrested in the city after the clashes.
